Fort Worth Flyers News Release
FORT WORTH, Texas, January 12, 2006 - Austin Toros forward Marcus Fizer scored eight fourth quarter points including the game winning 15 footer as time expired to lift the Toros to a 92-90 victory over the Fort Worth Flyers, snapping a three game losing streak in what fans have dubbed the "Battle of I-35."
"They were tougher down low tonight; Fizer is getting back in shape and he is a monster to defend," said Flyers head coach Sam Vincent. "It was a tough loss tonight, but I feel that we are making an effort to play quality basketball. We will look to continue with solid all around play as we prepare to hit the road."
Fort Worth came out of the gate hot tonight, getting the ball inside to big Luke Schenscher who hit three early buckets to help the Flyers get the early advantage. The Flyers held the lead the entire first period and took a
26-20 lead into the second quarter. Austin picked up the pace defensively in the second period, holding the Flyers to just 20 points as they began to assert their toughness in the paint. The Toros shot 59 percent from the field in the first half. Austin took a 49-46 lead into the break, giving them confidence to start the second half. In the third quarter the Toros again seemed to be more energetic, moving their feet and feeding off Ramel Curry's hot shooting from the perimeter. Austin took a five point lead into the fourth quarter but could not shake the feisty Flyers as Coach Vincent's team was able to move the ball well and get key buckets down the stretch from Ime Udoka and Kelenna Azubuike. With 26.6 seconds left and the score tied at 90, the Flyers called timeout to draw up a play to try and take the lead. Unable to execute, the Toros regained possession and designed a play for Fizer to isolate. Fizer was able to create some space and get off a shot just as the buzzer sounded and lift his team to victory.
The Flyers, now 3-1 in the "Battle of I-35", had another all around solid scoring night as six players were able to score double figures. Vonteego Cummings, Azubuike and Udoka all had a team high 15 points. Rawle Marshall chipped in with 10 points, and twin towers Schenscher and Deji Akindele combined for 21 points and 8 rebounds.
For the Austin Toros, Curry continued his solid play in place of injured Derrick Zimmerman, scoring a game high 23 points including 4 of 6 from behind the arc. Fizer added 13 points and a team high 7 rebounds while Andre Emmett and Jamar Smith added energy off the bench, combining for 23 points and 10 rebounds. Ezra Williams scored 14 points and hauled in 5 boards to conclude the double digit scorers for Austin.
The Flyers drop to 10-7 and will travel to Albuquerque to play the 9-7 Thunderbirds on January 13 for their third meeting in seven days.
The 8-7 Austin Toros travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on the 10-6 Arkansas RimRockers on the first day of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Showcase.
