Flyers Earn Second Overtime Win Over Toros

Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth Flyers fought off a night of cold shooting to escape with a 105-101 overtime victory against the gritty Austin Toros Saturday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The win gives the Flyers back to back overtime victories at the Toros' expense in what fans have deemed the "Battle of I-35."

The Flyers were led by Ime Udoka's 28 points and 11 rebounds but struggled to find rhythm with the starting five throughout the first three quarters. Flyers head coach Sam Vincent went to his bench and found the answer with Deji Akindele and Kelenna Azubuike coming up huge for the Flyers.

"Deji has the talent to be at the next level, and tonight he was great," said Vincent. "Kelenna gives us a lot of athleticism and was aggressive in getting to the basket."

Akindele's 22 points and Azubuike's 16 points and 8 rebounds were instrumental in the Flyers' fourth quarter comeback and overtime win. Forward Anthony Terrell chipped in with 13 points and 8 rebounds off the bench, and Brandon Robinson was the only other starter in double figures with 12 points. The Flyers also took care of the ball better than the Toros, giving up only 14 turnovers which helped counter 44 percent shooting from the field.

The Toros led from the start and held the lead all the way through the third quarter but could not hold off the feisty Flyers. All five Toros starters scored in double figures led by 20 points from guard Ramel Curry. Scott Merritt and Andre Emmett helped the Toros' cause with 18 and 16 points, respectively, but their efforts proved not to be enough. Jamar Smith posted a double-double for Austin, putting up 12 points and hauling in 12 rebounds.

The win moves the Flyers to 6-3 as they travel to face the Albuquerque Thunderbirds on December 23. Austin drops to 2-5 and will host the league leading Arkansas RimRockers (7-2) on December 23.
