Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Orange County shortstop Jermy Acey capped off a 5-for-7, five RBI performance with a solo homer in the top of the 12th inning, giving the Flyers an 11-10 victory over the Chico Outlaws Sunday night at Nettleton Stadium...Orange County completing a three-game series sweep and handing the Outlaws to their fourth consecutive loss.
The Flyers used an RBI double by Pat Breen and a sun-scoring single by Josh Arhart to go up 2-0 in the 1st inning against Chico starting pitcher Berek Fasking...but the Outlaws answered with a big bottom of the 1st - Orange County starter Charles Merricks uncorked a wild pitch allowing Steve Boggs to score from third...then Shane Cronin lined a single to right to plate Jesse Kovacs and Tony Torcato to give Chico a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning Matt Ceriani connected for his first home run of the year, a three-run shot to make the score 6-2. The Flyers plated a pair in the 2nd inning when Acey doubled home Travon Jackson and Jeff Van Houten...but in the bottom of the 2nd Torcato delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Boggs to give Chico a 7-4 lead. A Marcus Crockett sac fly in the top of the 5th brought home Fernando Pacheco to whittle the Outlaws lead to two, but again Chico responded - a Gabe Riley RBI groundout and a run-scoring double by Bryan Silverman in the bottom of the 5th put the Outlaws up 9-5.
Orange County jumped on Chico reliever Rob Ellis, tying up the contest on an Acey RBI double and run-scoring singles by Arhart, Pacheco and Buddy Morales. The score was still tied in the bottom of the 7th when Lino Garcia launched a solo homer to left, putting the Outlaws back on top 10-9. Chico was still clinging to that one-run lead in the 9th, but the Flyers tied it up again when Acey's single to right off Outlaws closer Todd Gelatka knocked in Gabe Mayorga. Chico had a chance to win it in regulation, but with two outs and runners at second and third, Silverman bounced to third to end the 9th and send the game into extra innings. The Outlaws got the potential winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the 11th thanks to a two-out Jose Valdez double...but Garcia struck out to end the inning. In the 12th Acey sent the first pitch he saw from Chico's Jason Roach high over the left field wall, giving Orange County their first lead since the top of the 1st - Dane De La Rosa came in from the Flyers bullpen to close it out, but the Outlaws - thanks to a dropped two-out fly ball by Breen - got one more chance to win the game...but De La Rosa struck out pinch-hitter Julian Benavidez to end it and give the Flyers their 10th victory over Chico in 11 tries this season.
Mike Natale (2-0) allowed just a run on three hits in a six inning relief appearance to earn the win for Orange County...Roach (0-7) suffered the loss for Chico. The Flyers piled up 21 hits on the night - in addition to Acey's five knocks, Jackson, Van Houten, Breen and Arhart had three hits apiece...Boggs had three of the Outlaws 10 hits, with Cronin and Silverman each adding two safeties. Sunday's loss dropped Chico to 7-12 in the second half and five-and-a-half games back of North Division-leading Edmonton; overall, the Outlaws are 22-39...Orange County improved to 10-8 in the second half and 38-23 for the year. Chico welcomes the Reno Silver Sox to Nettleton Stadium Monday for a four-game set...left-hander Scott Navarro (2-2) will be on the mound for the Outlaws in the series opener.
