Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Myrtle Beach used a consistent attack and outstanding pitching to regain control of the Southern Divisional Series with a 5-1 game two win over Winston-Salem at Ernie Shore Field on Friday night. The victory gives Myrtle Beach a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
An error on second baseman Travis Jones opened the door for the Warthogs to take the early lead, as a ball from lead off batter CJ Retherford was misplayed in the first inning. Salvador Sanchez followed the miscue with a single and the game's first run plated on a sacrifice fly from John Shelby III.
The Pelicans responded in the third as Warthogs' starter Clevelan Santeliz walked Gorkys Hernandez to lead off the inning. Santeliz retired Jones, but then walked Eric Campbell to put two aboard. Ernesto Mejia followed with an RBI single to score Hernandez and tie the game, 1-1. Tyler Flowers then ripped a go-ahead RBI double into the alley in left-center field that scored Campbell. Following Flowers' double, the skies opened up, and rain suspended the ballgame for 18 minutes. Santeliz used the stoppage to get back in control and worked out of jam without further damage incurred.
Myrtle Beach added a run to their lead in the sixth off of reliever Ricky Brooks. Brooks, who replaced Santeliz after the fourth inning, conceded back-to-back singles to Concepcion Rodriguez and Phillip Britton to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Hernandez grounded into a double play, but Rodriguez scored to make it 3-1 Myrtle Beach.
Meanwhile, Pelicans' starter Cole Rohrbough was masterful for six innings. The left-hander allowed just two hits and the lone unearned run in the first inning. He did walk the bases loaded in the sixth, but deftly worked out of the jam to keep the Pelicans in front. Rohrbough (1-0) earned the win for Myrtle Beach.
The birds added another tally in the seventh to stretch their lead to three runs. Campbell doubled off Brooks to start the inning, and was plated as Mejia doubled behind him. The Pelicans did squander an opportunity to break the game open later in the inning when Rodriguez bounced into a double play with the bases loaded and one out.
Flowers capped the Pelicans scoring and an outstanding night at the plate with a tape-measure solo-home run off of Steven Spurgeon in the ninth inning. Flowers was 3-for-4 on the evening with two doubles, the home run and two runs batted in.
Brett Butts worked a scoreless seventh inning, but walked the first two batters in the eighth before Craig Kimbrel worked out of the inning. Kimbrel recorded the first two outs of the ninth and then handed it off to Ferdin Tejeda, who closed out the game by retiring Greg Paiml.
Game four of the series is scheduled for noon on Saturday at Ernie Shore Field. RHP Ryne Reynoso (10-6, 3.36) will make the start for Myrtle Beach against RHP Jacob Rasner (5-7, 3.29) for Winston-Salem.
