Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, AlaskaâThe search continues for a new coach of the Anchorage Aces, after interim coach Perry Florio decided this week not to return for the 2003-04 season.
Florio joined the Aces at the end of last season and guided the team to a strong finish (9-7-3) in his 19-game tenure after a 12-39-2 showing in its first 53 games. The team's ownership group had offered him a contract to return next season.
"The ownership group and the Anchorage fans were great to me and I really appreciate the opportunity to come up there in February," said Florio.
"I really respect the new ownership group, the fan base in Anchorage is tremendous and I am convinced the Aces are heading in the right direction. This was a very difficult decision, but at this point in my career I decided I wasn't ready to pursue this option."
"We're disappointed Perry decided not to return," said the club's managing partner, Terry Parks. "But at the same time, there are a lot of top-notch coaches out there, some with championships under their belts, and we're confident we will hire a coach that will help us put a winning team on the ice."
Parks has indicated that the Aces are moving quickly to formulate a short list by the middle of next week, and hope to have a new coach hired by May 15. In the meantime, 2003-04 season tickets remain on saleâfor more information, please call 258-ACES [2237].
