October 11, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Miami Majesty News Release

Sunrise, FL. Rap icons Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh highlight the list of post-game concert performers for the first five home games of the ABA Florida Pit Bulls, South Florida's newest professional sports team, according to co-owner and player/coach Tim Hardaway. In addition to the rap duo performing at the home opener on November 5th against the Orange County Buzz at the BankAtlantic Center, other musical acts include Trick Daddy (Nov 15), Akon (Nov 21), ABA Starz in Motion Tour (Nov 29) and 112 (Dec 8).

"The post-game concert series is a tremendous additional entertainment feature for Florida Pit Bulls games," Hardaway said. "It's something our fans can really look forward to. They'll see great basketball and top notch live concert all in the same night all for the price of one. You can't beat it." Angela Rizzi, "co-owner and VP of Entertainment for the ABA, added, "This is the kind of quality entertainment component that the ABA will feature throughout the league with many more great shows to follow."

The post-game concerts will take place immediately following the Shooting Starz "Mike Check" talent competition, where game attendees will have the chance to vote for their favorite local entertainers who are competing for a record deal. The headliner performers for the remaining 12 home games will be announced at a later date.

Hardaway and the Florida Pit Bulls commence their inaugural campaign on the road versus the Pittsburgh Xplosion on Sunday, October 30th. The home opener will be the following Saturday, November 5th at the BankAtlantic Center against former NBA star Cedrick Ceballos and the Orange County Buzz at 7pm.

Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh were rap pioneers in the late '80s and early '90's that can still bring down the house. Blinded by broken glass as an infant, Slick Rick took to wearing his signature eye patch at an early age and later became famous for his raw yet honest lyrics.

Doug E. Fresh was the world's first and perhaps greatest human beat-boxer. Able to produce songs using only his voice box and a microphone, Doug E. Fresh foreshadowed the popularity of beat-box artists such as Rahzel and Scratch.

Akon was born in Senegal before he moved with his father - a jazz percussionist - and mother to New Jersey, where he discovered rap. Akon's debut LP, "Trouble" was released in 2004 and featured a hybrid of raps and African-styled vocals. Equally rooted in soul, gospel and hip-hop, 112 was the most successful urban vocal group to emerge from P. Diddy's Bad Boy Records label. Though unlike many other artists on the label, 112's image was clean and wholesome which helped the group cross over to a more mainstream audience. The four members of 112 - Marvin, Daron, Q and Mike - met while attending high school together in Atlanta.
