Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Florida Panthers General Manager Randy Sexton announced today that the Florida Panthers will play a National Hockey League preseason game against the Boston Bruins on Thursday, September 23rd at The Blue Cross Arena. Further details will be announced at a later date.
"The Florida Panthers, in conjunction with the Rochester Americans, are pleased to bring a National Hockey League preseason game to the City of Rochester," said Sexton. "The Rochester community is filled with passionate hockey fans and we look forward to providing them with great entertainment. Curt Styres, Lewis Staats and the entire Rochester organization are very important partners of ours. This is yet another example of our mutual commitment to the city of Rochester and the great Amerks fans."
The event marks the first time that the Panthers will play a game in Rochester. The Panthers and Amerks are in the second year of a three-year affiliation deal. The game is also the first NHL game played in Rochester since the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Washington Capitals on October 26, 2005 in a regular season Contest.
The game has special significance for Amerks Owner Curt Styres as he grew up idolizing former Amerks and Boston Bruins forward Stan Jonathan, who lived down the street from him on the Six Nations Reserve.
"Boston was my team. We didn't have a TV so we went over to my uncle's to watch Toronto, Boston, Montreal, New York and Detroit. Buffalo and Toronto never interested me even though they were closer," said Styres. "I liked the big bad Bruins with Esposito, Cheevers, Orr, Cashman, Middleton, Wensink, O'Reilly, Marcotte, Johnston, Cherry and my man, 'Stan the Man.' The Bruins treated my friend Stan very well and had good things to say about him. I still respect the Bruins' organization."
The Amerks are off to one of their best starts in club history, racing out to a 13-2-1-0 record after 16 games, while tying their single-season franchise record with 11 straight wins. Rochester goes for win No. 14 on Friday, November 20th as it hosts the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05 p.m.
