Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (July 6, 2009) - RHP Freddy Flores allowed just one hit out of the infield and shut out the Worcester Tornadoes in a 10-0 win for the Brockton Rox in the second game of a double header on Monday night at Campanelli Stadium. The Rox had previously taken the first game 4-2.
Brockton won the twin bill opener coming from behind on a two-run triple by rookie CF Chris Valencia in the fifth inning of a seven-inning game. It was Valencia's second hit and gave the Rox a 3-2 lead. Brockton would add an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by 3B Phillip Cuadrado an inning later.
LHP Bryan Morse picked up his first win in 2009 allowing two runs on five hits in five innings. RHP Keith Noe added a scoreless inning of relief, and RHP Jerry Dunn closed the door with the final three outs. Dunn became the organization's all-time saves leader with his 29th save in a Brockton Rox uniform, and his fifth of the 2009 season.
Flores was brilliant in Monday's nightcap, retiring the first 11 batters he faced before 1B Chris Colabello dribbled an infield single to the gap between second and third with two outs in the fourth inning. The only other hit came with two outs in the last inning, a line drive up the middle by RF Carlos Sosa. Flores struck out a career-high six batters and walked just one.
The Rox offense piled on against Worcester starter RHP Jusef Frias in game two. Brockton scored two runs in the third inning, started by Valencia's third RBI of the day, a single with runners on first and third and two outs. An inning later, C Jon Gossard's first professional hit was a two-run single with the bases loaded to push the lead to 4-0. In the fifth, Gossard again came to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered yet another two-run single. Gossard's second hit came two batters after 2B Melvin Falu had broken open the contest with a two-run single of his own. Brockton scored six times in the fifth and sent 11 batters to the plate. When the dust settled, the game was firmly in hand at 10-0.
Flores finished his brilliant outing striking out two in the ninth inning before the two-out single by Sosa. It was his second win in just his third professional start.
Brockton and Worcester play a second consecutive double header on Tuesday night in Worcester beginning at 6:05 PM. LHP Craig Anderson (4-2, 2.28 ERA) will face Worcester's RHP Matt Weagle (1-3, 4.74 ERA) in game one, and RHP Buster Lussier (NR) will make his Rox debut against Worcester's RHP Nick Conway (1-2, 5.12 ERA) in the second game. It will be the Rox third double header in three days.
