San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas--- Just as the matchup between the Edinburg Roadrunners (8-9) and San Angelo Colts (11-6) seemed set for extra innings, the first batter of the ninth inning, Osiel Flores, sent a ball into the Colts Bullpen giving the Roadrunners a 5-4 walk -off win.
The Colts would trail all the way until the seventh inning. With San Angelo down 2-1, Bryan Frichter would continue to nab extra base hits as he doubled over a shallow Eric Gonzalez in right field. Two hitters later, Nick Mahin would ground to third baseman Carlos Hereaud. Hereaud would field it cleanly but the errant throw to first base would reach the stands scoring Frichter and tying the game at two.
The Colts would capture their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning as Bradley Goldsmith would lift a high fly ball to center field, Vincent Blue would make a poor attempt at the ball as it drifted over his head catching the heel of his glove. Blue was unable to make the play, he was given the error as Goldsmith stood at third. The Next hitter Jason Diaz sent a slider just over the head of the short stop, that two out single would give the Colts a 3-2 lead.
However in the bottom of the eighth, the Roadrunners collected three straight hits, adding another two runs and regaining the lead by just a run.
Frichter would lead off the top of the ninth, his drag bunt attempt was misplayed by Kelley Casares, the right handed pitcher for Edinburg, as Frichter would wind up on second after a two-base error as Caseres threw the ball in to the seats. Jason Landreth would follow and would go down on strikes. With one out in the frame and Nick Mahin at the plate, Frichter would successfully steal third base. Mahin would lift a high fly ball to shallow left field, Frichter opted not to test the arm of Left fielder Amado German. The Colts would remain down a run with two outs left in the ninth. Hunter Jobes at the plate, Frichter attempted to steal home. Jobes would swing at the pitch grounding a single through the right side. The game would be knotted at four.
The excitement of the comeback did not last for long, as Roadrunner Osiel Flores homered in the bottom of the ninth leading off the inning. The solo shot would do it, as Edinburg rushed homeplate to congratulate Flores.
Offensively for the Colts, Jason Diaz and Ronnie Gaines each nabbed two singles apiece, Diaz added an RBI. Nick Mahin singled with two RBI's, as Bryan Frichter collected a double with three runs scored.
On the mound, Colts starter Drew Coffey went six innings allowing just two earned, punching out seven. Doug Brandt (0-1) earned the loss, going one inning allowing three earned runs including Flores homer. The winning pitcher for Edinburg is Kelley Casares (1-0).
The Colts and Roadrunners will square off tomorrow for game two of this four game series. First pitch is set for 7:05. Chandler Barnard (3-0) will attend the mound for the Colts, and RHP Tim Hanes (2-0) will go for the Roadrunners.
