(Eastlake, OH)--Josh Flores singled twice and drove in a pair of runs Tuesday night, leading the Lexington Legends to a 9-3 win over the Captains at Classic Park.
The Legends lowered their magic number for clinching the SAL North first-half title to two. Second-place Delmarva won at home 4-2 over Lakewood.
The Captains (27-38) were held to four hits by a trio of Lexington pitchers. Levi Romero started and went 4 1/3. Righty Sammy Gervacio (5-0) took over and retired all eight batters he faced. Chris Blazek finished the final two innings.
The Legends (41-23) lowered the boom on the Captains with a four-run fourth inning, erasing a 2-1 Captains lead. Flores had an RBI single to tie the game, and Mark Ori later added a single to put the Legends in the lead. The SAL's top hitter, Ole Sheldon, also chipped in a two-run single.
Captains starter Jim Deters (4-4) left after 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs, but only two earned. Deters walked four and struck out one.
In the third game of the series on Wednesday, RHP Carlton Smith will start for the Captains against Lexington's Sean Walker.
The 2006 SAL All-Star game at Classic Park is now just a week away. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20th at 7:35 p.m. For tickets to the home run derby and all-star game, call 440-954-WINS.
