Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
SAN ANGELO, TX -- The Prairie Dogs 32nd victory of the season may have been their most impressive. Freddy Flores turned in the club's second complete game of the year and the Dogs cranked out a season-high 21 hits in a 10-1 victory over the Colts at Foster Field on Sunday night.
Flores set down the Colts in order five times, allowing only seven hits and a single run in his seventh career complete game. The 38-year-old righty retired the first five batters and 12 of the first 13.
The Colts broke out for three hits in the fifth but ran themselves into a scoreless frame. Salvador Paniagua doubled to left-center to start the inning but was thrown out at the plate by Geraldo Valentin when Jamar Walton singled to right field. After a Landon Camp single, Valentin then made a leaping grab on a Mark Ramos liner and threw to second base, doubling off Walton and ending the inning.
Offensively, the Prairie Dogs enjoyed perhaps their most impressive attack of the season. Jason Martin started the game with a single and scored on Kyle Nichols' 11th homer of the year, a two-run shot that soared over the left field fence to give the Dogs the lead. Valentin and Danny Gonzalez then strung together consecutive two-out doubles to widen the advantage to 3-0.
The Abilene bats continued their onslaught of Colts' starter Brian Henschel in the second. Clint Stroud, Martin, Eddie Browne, and Joe Weik all collected hits in front of Nichols who again burned San Angelo, this time with a two-run double to right center. Nichols was 3-for-5 with four R.B.I.s.
Joe Weik joined the fun in the sixth with his 12th round-tripper of the season, a three-run shot down the line in left that widened the Dogs' lead to 10-0. Of the Dogs' season-best 21 hits, nine went for extra bases -- six doubles, two homers, and a triple.
Eight of the Dogs' nine starters collected multiple-hit games. Clint Stroud went 4-for-5 with four singles and a run scored while Eddie Browne turned in a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored and an R.B.I. Flores' nine inning performance marked Abilene's second complete game of the year after Matt Larkins spun an eight-hit shutout on Tuesday.
The Dogs and Colts will continue their final series of the season when they butt heads on Monday night at Foster Field. Hear the game beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55 on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com.
