SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi RiverKings peppered Andrew Flemming with 39 shots, including 19 in the third period, but he withstood all of them as the Louisiana IceGators (6-5-0) beat the RiverKings (3-5-1), 1-0, at the Landers Center Tuesday afternoon.
It was the first of two Face Off Field Trips for the RiverKings this year. As part of the program students from local schools come to a RiverKings game for an educational experience.
The IceGators scored the only goal of the game late in the first. With Matt Wray and Kirk Byczynski both in the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the teams skated 4-on-4. The IceGators worked the puck into the offensive zone before the puck was thrown in front from the right corner. Goalie Adam Courchaine poked it out of the crease, but it went right to the stick of Clark Byczynski, who fired it past Courchaine with 1:13 left in the first.
The RiverKings carried play much of the rest of the game, outshooting the IceGators 31-13 over the final two periods, but Flemming stopped them all. He had some help as the RiverKings hit two posts, but his biggest save came in the third period when he made a glove save on a Matt Whitehead breakaway to preserve the win.
Courchaine stopped 17 of 18 shots for the RiverKings in the loss. The RiverKings were 0-for-2 on the power play while the IceGators were 0-for-1. The teams play for the third straight time tomorrow night at the Cajundome in Lafayette. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
The RiverKings raised over $9,000 for the Desoto County Schools Superintendent's Youth Leadership Council.
The RiverKings are back home at the Landers Center this Saturday, November 29 for Mustache Awareness Night. Tickets start as low as $5 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com/riverkings.
