Columbus Downs Fayetteville in Overtime, 2-1

The Columbus Cottonmouths pulled out a 2-1 (OT) overtime victory over the Fayetteville FireAntz on a clutch goal by Shawn Bates.

Columbus was led by goalie Shannon Szabados, who finished with 35 saves while allowing one goal. Szabados certainly lowered her goals against average, which was 3.45 entering the contest.

The Cottonmouths were paced by Bates, who racked up one goal. Bates scored 56 seconds into overtime to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Levi Lind assisted on the tally.

Columbus stifled Fayetteville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 45 shots that the Cottonmouths put on net surpassed Columbus' average of 30.9 shots per game this season.

Columbus also got a goal from Nick Curry as well. More assists for Columbus came via Craig Simchuk, who had one.

The FireAntz excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Fayetteville's defensemen bolstered the FireAntz's offensive attack, as they bombarded Szabados with 15 shots. Fayetteville forced the Cottonmouths goalie Szabados to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

The FireAntz were led by John Clewlow, who scored the team's only goal. Clewlow scored 6:08 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Derek Elliott provided the assist.

Columbus incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Kevin Murdock rejected 43 shots on goal for Fayetteville. The FireAntz incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
