Columbus' Matt Gingera Named Easton Player of the Week

November 25, 2014 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (November 25, 2014) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Matt Gingera of the Columbus Cottonmouths is the Easton Player of the Week for November 17-23.

Gingera led the Cottonmouths to their first two wins of the season by scoring four goals, including two with the man advantage and both-game winners.

On Friday, the Winnipeg, MN native scored the tying goal with 1:05 remaining after Columbus had pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker before netting the game-winning, power play goal with just 34 seconds remaining in overtime as the Cottonmouths defeated Fayetteville 5-4. Gingera followed that up on Saturday with a pair of second period goals as Columbus defeated Peoria 4-3.

Last February, Gingera etched his name in the record books by scoring five goals in Columbus' 6-5 overtime win against the Mississippi Surge, joining Chris Wilson, Rob Sich and Steve Roberts as the only SPHL players to score five goals in a single game. In 2012-13, Gingera captured SPHL Rookie of the Year honors as he led all rookies in points (50), while his 28 goals and nine game-winning goals were both second-most among all SPHL players. Gingera played his collegiate hockey at Sacred Heart University (CT) where he led the Pioneers in scoring his senior season, earning 2011-12 Third-Team All Conference honors. Gingera played junior hockey in Manitoba with the hometown Winnipeg Saints, where he led entire MJHL in goals (66) in 2007-08 and finished as all-time leading goal scorer in Saints history (149).

Also Nominated: Kevin Murdock, Fayetteville (1-0-0, 1.00 gaa, .973 save%), Nick Lazorko, Huntsville (2 gp, 1-2-3), Matt Whitehead, Mississippi (1 gp, 2-1-3, +3), Brett Beebe, Pensacola (2 gp, 1-3-4, +3) and Alex Hudson, Peoria (3 gp, 1-4-5, 1 gwg)
