Flash Family Foundation Wrapping Up
December 23, 2009 - NBA G League (G League)
Utah Flash News Release
PROVO, Utah, Dec. 23, 2009 - Over 200 volunteers, including players and staff from the NBA Development League Utah Flash basketball team, have been involved this week in helping 80 Utah County families through the Flash Family Foundation.
The Flash Family Foundation, the creation of Flash owners Brandt and Katie Andersen, has been working with Utah County school systems to help identify children and families in need. With the families finally identified, the volunteers went to work buying gifts and essential daily living items for 80 Utah County families. In addition, the Foundation has done several food drives, donating all collected food to Community Action Services in Provo.
"We have always loved giving back to the community, and one of our motivations for bringing the Flash to Utah County was exactly that, the ability to give back." Brandt Andersen said. "We feel lucky to live in Utah County but there are many here in need. We have seen this need increase over the past two years during the recession. Many are out of work and the Flash Family Foundation provides Christmas and a jump start for the New Year. Most would be surprised to find out that there are children in Utah County living without heat and on dirt floors. It is our responsibility as neighbors to help."
With Flash players, staff, season ticket holders and Pinnacle Dancers taking the lead in getting the gifts purchased and wrapped earlier this week, the gift deliveries are completed just in time for the holiday celebration. Along with gifts, hygiene necessities, and clothing, the families will be helped with food, jobs, and specials services by the local Community Action Services branch.
"The reason this is such a success is two-fold," Katie Andersen said. "First, there are people in our own backyard that really need this help, and so we like to give back to a community that has given so much to us. Second, our wonderful volunteers take time out of their busy holiday schedule to make someone's Christmas dream a reality. Without them we could never make such a positive impact in the community."
