Morris Almond continued his early season scoring streak but the Springfield Armor were unable to build on their previous win, dropping a 108-94 contest to the Erie in front of 2,012 fans at the MassMutual Center. Almond, currently leading the league in scoring at 28.3 points per game, scored 37 points but Erie outrebounded and outshot the Armor. The led by John Bryant's 13 rebounds and Donell Taylor's 24 points, improved their record to 3-7 and the Armor dropped to 1-8.
The came out of the gates on fire, shooting 68% in the first quarter and making a concerted effort to get the ball inside. Moving the ball well early, Erie had 13 assists on their first 15 field goals. Springfield switched to a zone defense in the second quarter to tighten up their interior defense but Erie continued to find the open man. Erie forward Ivan Harris came off the bench and hit three three-pointers in the quarter, scoring 10 of his 12 points before halftime. Erie's lead would grow to 19 before Springfield guards Morris Almond and JamesOn Curry hit back to back three pointers and Curry followed with a layup to cut the lead to 11.
Despite Morris Almond's 20 first half points, the Armor went into the half down 61-48.
Erie pushed their lead to 20 midway through the third quarter as they continued to exploit the Armor in the paint. Morris Almond continued to shoot well for Springfield and keyed a 7-0 run to bring the Armor within 13 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. But Erie, led by John Bryant's seven points in the quarter, outscored the Armor 10-3 to close out the quarter and take a 20 point lead into the final quarter. The Armor wouldn't get any closer than down 16 in the fourth quarter and would lose by a final score of 108-94.
The Springfield Armor invites fans to celebrate the New Year at the MassMutual Center as they take on the Iowa Energy January 1st at 7 pm.
