Saint John Flames News Release
The Saint John Flames hosted the Portland Pirates at Harbour Station on Saturday, October 5th, in AHL pre-season action.
Jason Payne opened the scoring for the Flames 1:23 into the game. Portland tied the game at 1 a little over half-way through the first period on a goal by J-F Dufour. Flames rookie Matthew Lombardi notched the only goal of the second frame and gave the home squad a 2-1 lead. In the third, Steve Hildenbrand scored for the Flames on a solo effort to put Saint John ahead by 2. Portland rallied and DuFour notched his second of the game for Portland to pull the Pirates to within 1, but that was as far as they would get.
The fans were treated to some heated exchanges resulting in 14 major penalties being called between the clubs. Several players on both clubs made strong cases to their coaches as to their potential value to their team. All in all it was an entertaining pre-season bout for the 3,705 hockey hungry Saint John fans and a definite sign of things to come as the season nears.
Saint John Flames season tickets are available by calling 635-2637 or by stopping by the Flames administration office.
The Flames open their tenth anniversary season at home on Friday, October 11th when they host the Providence Bruins.
