Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Port Huron Flags came from three points back to send the visiting Fort Wayne Komets to a shootout, before being outshot by one point for the final score of 4-3.
Things turned physical very quickly, as a fight broke out between B.J. Adams and Bogdan Rudenko within the first two minutes. Adams was given a 2-minute minor and 5 and 10 minute majors that kept him in the box for the duration of the first period. Fort Wayne launched an offensive onslaught that got them a pair of goals less than a minute apart, from Martin Gascon and Rudenko, at 9:35 and 10:03, respectively. Near the end of the period, Brent Henley and Rob Snowball knuckled up, but no clear winner was determined. J.C. Ruid's goal, from David Hukalo at 18:53, widened the Komets' lead to three, as they outshot the Flags, 11-9.
Nineteen minutes of the second session passed without any scoring, but a goalie interference call to Ruid gave the Flags enough time for Mike Olynyk to pick up a loose puck and stuff it behind Kevin St. Pierre for the first Port Huron goal of the night. B.J. Adams and Greg Bullock were credited with the assists on the score that came with 48 seconds left on the clock. All 13 of Fort Wayne's shots were stuffed by Noah Ruden, as the Flags recorded 11 shots on goal
Olynyk closed the gap at 6:54 in the third, with another power play goal, this time from Colt King and Bullock. The crowd of 1,979 exploded when Bobby Kukulka tied the game at 16:59, off assists from Adams and Bullock. No stranger to shootouts, the Flags geared up for fiery finish.
The shootout went to eight rounds, with five Komets' goals besting the Flags' four. K.J. Voorhees netted the game-winner for the Komets in the eighth. Port Huron picked up a point for the overtime contest.
AT&T awarded the First, Second and Third Stars of the Game to Voorhees, Olynyk and Bullock, respectively. The Flags next home game is Saturday, Jan. 6 against the Muskegon Fury. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at McMorran Arena.
