Flags Break Their Losing Streak, Ousting IceHogs 5-4

New center Petr Jelinek proved to be a valuable asset for the Flags, getting a hat trick and an assist in Thursday's 5-4 win over top-ranked Rockford IceHogs.

Port Huron's Jim Murphy opened the scoring at 2:40 in the first period with Scott Horvath picking up his seventh assist as a Flag and newly acquired John Glavota earning his first assist as a Flag.

Petr Jelinek scored on a powerplay at 12:10 with Brett Lutes and newcomer Chris Hodgson each earning an assist to put the Flags up 2-0 midway through the first.

Jelinek scored a second powerplay goal at 19:38 to make it 3-0 heading into the second.

Robin Big Snake and Preston Mizzi scored the next two goals in the second period with Mizzi's goal coming on a powerplay at 12:18 to bring the IceHogs within one before Petr Jelinek scored a shorthanded goal at 18:54, assisted by Brett Lutes, to make it a 4-2 game for the Flags heading into the third.

Jason Notermann and Olivier Proulx each scored early in the third period to tie the game 4-4 but Ryan Gillis scored the final goal of the game at 12:28 to make it 5-4 Flags with Chris Hodgson and Petr Jelinek earning the assist.

The Flags held the lead to end the game with Jeremy Symington gaining the win with 33 saves as the IceHogs out-shot Port Huron 37-28.

The Flags come home on Sat, Feb. 25 to face off against the Kalamazoo Wings at McMorran Place Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
