Five Two-Out Runs Help Boulders Topple Tornadoes

May 25, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Rockland Boulders scored four runs in the second inning and five of their six in the game with two outs in a 6-4 victory at Provident Bank Park on Friday. Scott Clement and Todd Gossage hit back-to-back homers to spark the second frame rally, while Cole Kraft added a pair of two-out RBI singles (including one that inning).

Julian Sampson earned the victory with five innings of three-hit ball, despite walking six batters. The Tornadoes left the bases loaded three times, and kept two men on base on a couple of other accounts.

Jose Canseco was not retired in five plate appearances, walking three times, cracking a single and getting hit by a pitch. In four of those appearances, he worked the count full.

Cameron Monger scored twice and had an RBI double, while Alex Trezza added a pair of RBI (a first inning sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk in the sixth), plus a single. Nick Salotti walked three times in the defeat.

Michael Bourdon hit the first batter he faced, but retired the next (and final) six that he faced with groundball outs in relief of Zach Zuercher. Zuercher allowed six runs (all earned) on ten Boulders hits and two walks.

Worcester scored first with a Trezza sac fly to plate Monger in the first inning. Cam had reached on a Ryan Mollica error. The Boulders responded with four in the second, including five hits in a row.

After the back-to-back homers, Glen Johnson singled, then stole second. Qualon Millender singled him home and took second on the throw to the plate. Cole Kraft hit a slow roller that Tony Patane charged and threw to first, but it wasn't in time. On the play, Millender-- who later in the game tripled and scored again-- took third and home, just ahead of the tag by Alex Trezza at the plate.

The Tornadoes allowed single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before getting back on the board with a two-run sixth. Brendon Kelliher led the frame off with a walk (the first of three innings in a row to start that way), then scored on the Monger double. Cam came around on a bases-loaded walk issued by Andy Suiter (one of two runs he allowed in two-thirds of an inning).

One inning later, Johnny Welch scored on a Brandon Pinckney sac fly with the bases loaded.

Game two of the series is Saturday night at 7:00pm, with Ryan Bicondoa taking the hill for the Tornadoes. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:50 with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM.tv.
