International League Final -- Saturday, May 3rd
@ Lynx Stadium, Ottawa, ON
Ottawa Lynx 6
Toledo Mud Hens 2
Winning Pitcher - Fernando Rijo (1-0)
Losing Pitcher - Seth Greisinger (3-2) Fifth straight win for Lynx gets them to 14-14. Player of the Game: Fernando Rijo overcame first inning struggles in his first Triple-A start this season, holding the Mud Hens to 2 runs in 5.0 innings, while striking out 7. Home Runs:
OTT - none
TOL - none Key Plays: Brian Rios' unusual 4th inning triple to right scored Pedro Swann, and Rios scored one batter later, giving the Lynx a comfortable lead. Recap: Toledo scored early, as Jhonny Perez led off with a home run to left. One out later Ernie Young walked and Kevin Witt singled, making it look like it might be a short day for Fernando Rijo, just called up from Bowie. Rijo surrendered a sac fly to A.J. Hinch, and would not give up a run the rest of the way. The Lynx took the lead in the bottom of the third, counting three against starter Seth Greisinger. Joey Hammond worked a one-out walk, and was followed by leadoff man Darnell McDonald's infield single in front of the mound. Eddy Garabito then grounded one to right, scoring Hammond. Luis Matos then hit his league-leading 10th double to left, scoring McDonald. Jack Cust's RBI groundout to second ended the scoring. The Lynx got two more in an unusual 4th. Pedro Swann reached on shortstop Danny Klassen's error. On the next pitch, with Swann running, Brian Rios smacked a low liner to through the infield to right. Somehow, Toledo right fielder Ernie Young did not pick up the ball and reacted as if it was a fly to center. As the ball rolled slowly to the right field corner, Young wandered to center. Swann rounded the bases and scored, and by the time Young got the ball, Rios was on third. Joey Hammond followed with a liner to center to score Rios. The Lynx scored their final run in the 6th, when Luis Matos tripled to right center to lead off. After a Cust groundout and a Carlos Mendez intentional walk, Steve Lomasney extended his hit streak to 13 games, scoring Matos. The Lynx bullpen of Hector Carrasco, Todd Rizzo, and Mike Garcia shut the door with 4.0 innings of shut out ball, giving up only three hits and striking out 6. Fernando Rijo (5.0ip, 5h, 2r, 2er, 2bb, 7k) gets his first straight win.
Seth Greisinger (4.1ip, 8h, 6r, 5er, 3bb, 2k) takes his second loss. Next Game: The Lynx go for the four-game sweep of Toledo tomorrow, when they take on the Mud Hens at 1:05 p.m. Probable Pitchers for Friday: Ottawa RHP Travis Driskill (2-0, 2.32) vs. RHP Tyler Walker (1-1, 5.00) Upcoming promotions at Lynx Stadium: Tomorrow is Umpire Appreciation Day at Lynx Stadium. No, it's not a blatant attempt to curry the favour of the men in blue, but a chance for local umpires to participate in a clinic hosted by International League umpires Darren Spagnardi, Troy Fullwood and Dan Cricks. A group of around 100 local umpires will be in attendance. Certified umpires can purchase a ticket (which covers a game ticket and the clinic) for only $5. Any other persons who have a game ticket to tomorrow's game are welcome to participate.
