Five Snappers Appear on Midwest League Top Prospects List

Five Snappers from the 2005 team were listed by Baseball America in its latest issue as being top prospects in the Midwest League. Making the list were Anthony Swarzak (#8), Matt Garza (#10), Jay Rainville (#11), Trevor Plouffe (#12) and David Winfree (#14). The Snappers had the most players listed in the top 20 of any team in the 14 team Midwest League. Anthony Swarzak (RHP) was 9-5 for Beloit with a 4.04 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 91 innings of work before a mid-season promotion to Ft. Myers. Swarzak was the Minnesota Twins second round pick in the 2004 draft. The Twins first pick in the 2005 draft, Matt Garza (RHP) was 3-3 with a 3.54 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 56 innings. Jay Rainville (RHP), a first round selection in the 2004 draft, was 8-2 with a 3.77 ERA. Rainville struck out 77 in 82 innings before being promoted to Ft. Myers. Trevor Plouffe (SS), the Twins first pick in the 2004 draft, hit .223 and drove in 60 runs in 127 games. David Winfree (3B) set Beloit franchise mark for hits with 165. Winfree lead the Midwest League with 101 RBI's. He was selected in the 13th round of the 2003 draft.

The Twins also had three players in the Top 20 in the Appalachian League (R). Second baseman and outfielder Juan Portes was ranked the seventh best prospect, while Alexander Smit (LHP) and Ryan Mullins (LHP) were rated 17th and 18th, respectively. Smit spent time in Beloit early this season before being sent down to Elizabethton. While in Beloit Smit was 1-9 with a 5.98 ERA. With Elizabethton Smit was 6-1 with a 1.97 ERA. He struck out 86 batters in 45 innings and walked 12.
