Salem, VA - Trailing 3-2 heading into the seventh inning Tuesday night at Salem Memorial Ballpark, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (42-53, 11-19) needed a boost offensively to keep pace with the Salem Red Sox (49-47, 14-16). They got it and then some.

The Woodpeckers scored five times in the seventh and recorded 14 hits in the series-opening win over the Red Sox, taking the game by a 8-4 final score. Fayetteville has now won four of its last five after snapping a four game losing streak on Thursday against Carolina.

Salem grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against Woodpeckers starter Nic Swanson on a Blaze Jordan RBI single. However, Fayetteville answered the following inning with an RBI base hit of their own as Leosdany Molina plated Tyler Whitaker with a line drive to left to even the score at one. Swanson pitched himself out of trouble multiple times to go three innings allowing just the one run on three hits and three walks while striking out one.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning when Yeuris Ramirez scored on a Wikelman Gonzalez wild pitch to briefly give the Woodpeckers a one-run edge. In the bottom half of the frame, a couple of walks from Deylen Miley (W, 3-6) and a throwing error from Whitaker brought in the tying run for the Red Sox. Moments later, Daniel McElveny lifted a sacrifice fly to center to regain the lead for the home team, 3-2.

Salem reliever Felix Cepeda (L, 2-2) went out for his second inning of work in the seventh, but he quickly ran into trouble. Molina drew a walk then made it to third on a wild pickoff attempt by Cepeda. Ramirez then drove Molina in with a single to tie the game once again. Cody Orr followed with a base hit, setting the table for Jose Alvarez. The Fayetteville catcher ripped a two-run triple into the right center field gap to push the Woodpeckers ahead, 5-3. Immediately after, Logan Cerny blasted his team-leading 15th home run of the season to double the lead to four and chase Cepeda from the ballgame.

The Red Sox were able to get a run back in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a solo shot to right from Marcelo Mayer. In the top of the eighth however, Cody Orr picked up his third hit of the game on an RBI double that scored Molina and closed out the scoring. It was Orr's second three-hit game of the season, both coming in the past two contests. Kasey Ford entered the game in the bottom half and recorded the final six outs without incident to take home the win for Fayetteville.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday night for the second of six games this week. RHP Alex Santos gets the ball for the Woodpeckers while RHP Gabriel Jackson looks to even the series for Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET.
