Five-run ninth gives Beavers 7-4 victory

TUCSON, Ariz. - Pinch-hitter Ben Risinger and Xavier Nady both had key doubles in the top of the ninth as the Portland Beavers rallied for five runs in the inning for a 7-4 victory over the Tucson Sidewinders Saturday night at Tucson Electric Park.

Risinger, who was 0-for-13 in his last five games coming into the game, broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double to right-center field. After singles by Bernie Castro and Freddy Guzman, Nady followed with a three-run double to give the Beavers a five-run lead.

Tucson (28-21) countered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Mike Bynum (3-5) limited the damage for his third win of the year.

Jose Nieves went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Beavers, who improved to 23-27 on the season.

Mark Freed (1-1) gave up the five runs in the ninth for his first loss of the year.

Marty McLeary pitched 5.1 innings in his second start for the Beavers, giving up two runs on five hits.

In the third, the Beavers got on the board with a J.J. Furmaniak solo shot to left-center field, his fifth home run of the year.

Portland added another in the sixth when Tagg Bozied singled up the middle to score Castro, who led off the inning with a bunt single.

The Sidewinders tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning. Noochie Varner led off with a walk and Tim Olson followed with a double to deep center field. Steve Neal's RBI groundout scored Varner and Julio Ramirez' single scored Olson with the tying run.

The teams continue their series Sunday night at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Dennis Tankersley struck out nine and gave up three unearned runs but took a loss in his first start of the season for the Padres Saturday night in Milwaukee ... Humberto Quintero threw out two would-be base stealers in the game ... Bozied's RBI was his first since returning from the disabled list on Friday ... Joe Gerber had a seven-game hitting streak snapped by going 0-for-1 after entering the game in a double switch ... it was Risinger's first multi-RBI game of the season.
