Portland puts up 5 runs in the top of the ninth defeat Tucson 7-4. PH Ben Risinger's 2-run double broke up the 2-2 tie and RF Xavier Nady's 3-run double put a Tucson comeback out of reach. The win propelled the Beavers to 23-27 and the loss dropped the Sidewinders back into second place at 28-21, a half game behind Sacramento, who were rained out for the second consecutive day.
LHP Mark Freed (1-1) took the loss as he gave up the 5 runs after retiring the first 2 batters of the inning. LHP Mike Bynum (3-5) earned the win for Portland after he went 2 innings, allowing only 2 unearned runs on 2 hits.
Portland 3B Jose Nieves went 3-4 with a run and a 2B. SS J.J. Furmaniak hit his 5th home run of the season with a solo shot in the top of the 3rd, his only hit of the night. Staring pitcher RHP Marty McLeary allowed only 2 runs, both earned, while striking out 4 in his 5.1 innings pitched.
Tucson starting pitcher RHP Edgar Gonzalez pitched the longest outing for a Tucson starter this year going 8 innings, allowing only 2 runs, both earned on 8 hits. He left the game with a no decision as it was tied at 2. 2B Keoni DeRenne hit his first triple of the season and finished 2-4.
7,299 fans came out the ballpark, the 3rd largest crowd of the season to watch the game was complete in 2:33. Tomorrow's probables feature Portland's RHP Joey Hamilton (0-2, 5.24) versus Tucson's LHP Michael Gosling (1-1, 4.62). Game time is 6:00 PM.
