Valentino Pascucci assigned to Edmonton

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that first baseman/outfielder Valentino Pascucci has been optioned from Montreal. He will be available for Edmonton's game on Sunday afternoon against the Sacramento River Cats. To make room on the roster for Pascucci, infielder Luis Lopez was transferred to Double-A Harrisburg. Lopez is still contemplating whether or not he will accept the assignment. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 11 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders, plus two players (right-hander Seung Song and infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list.

Pascucci, 25, batted .217 (5-for-23) with two RBI in 12 games with Montreal. He was hitting .319 (23-for-72) with five home runs and 18 RBI in 18 games with the Trappers before being recalled by the Expos on April 26. Pascucci was named the PCL Batter of the Week, April 19-25. He set a club record on April 23 at Fresno with 14 total bases in a game at Grizzlies Stadium. Pascucci homered three times, tying a team record and scored five runs, which also tied a club mark. He drove in six runs in the contest. Pascucci was selected by Montreal in the 15th round of the 1999 draft and has spent his entire career in the Expos organization. He batted .281 (129-for-459) with 15 home runs and 85 RBI in 138 games with the Trappers in 2003. The native of Bellflower, California entered the 2004 campaign with a career .273 (581-for-2127) average, 87 home runs and 358 RBI in 618 minor league games.

Lopez, 30, was signed by Montreal as a free agent, January 21, 2004 and started the season with Montreal batting .154 (4-for-26) in 11 games before being optioned to Triple-A Edmonton on April 26. Lopez was sent outright to Edmonton on May 25. He started his career with independent Ogden of the Pioneer League before being singed as a free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays on June 15, 1996. Lopez spent six seasons in the Toronto organization, appearing in 41 games with the Blue Jays in 2001. He was then claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics on December 17, 2001 and spent two seasons with Triple-A Sacramento. In 22 games with the Trappers, Lopez was hitting .197 (13-for-66) with one home run and nine RBI. He entered the 2004 season batting .309 (1179-for-3811) with 89 home runs and 631 RBI in 1001 minor league games and .244 (29-for-119) with three home runs and 10 RBI in 41 major league games.

The next Trapper home game will be on Sunday, May 30 when the club will take on the Sacramento River Cats. The game, which is the completion of a suspended game from Friday night, will begin at 1:35 PM.
