Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- Colorado Springs shortstop Clint Barmes belted a one-out solo homer off Nashville reliever Jason Boyd in the top of the tenth inning and the Sky Sox got a double-play grounder to escape a jam in the bottom of the inning to give the visitors a 3-2 victory over the Sounds on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.
The loss was Nashville's second consecutive extra-inning defeat at the hands of the Sky Sox; Colorado Springs triumphed 5-2 in 11 innings on Saturday. The Sounds are now 3-6 in extra frames this season.
After falling behind 3-2 in the top of the tenth, the Sounds mounted a rally in the bottom of the inning. Tony Alvarez led off with a bunt single and moved to second on an Andy Abad walk. After Rich Thompson pinch-ran for Abad, he was erased on Luke Allen's fielder's choice grounder, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Sky Sox reliever Jason Gilfillan induced a double-play grounder to shortstop from Chris Truby to end the game.
Colorado Springs took an early 2-0 advantage by plating single runs in the second and third innings against Nashville starter Justin Reid. In the second, Sky Sox outfielder Choo Freeman opened the inning with a bunt single, was sacrificed to second, and later scored an unearned run on a throwing error by Sounds shortstop Mike Moriarty. Colorado Springs doubled the advantage an inning later when the leadoff batter in the frame again reached base and scored. Garrett Atkins singled, moved to third on Erick Almonte's single, and scored on an Andy Tracy sacrifice fly.
Nashville got a run back in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out rally. Alvarez drew a walk and stole his team-leading ninth base, moving ahead to third on the play due to a throwing error by Sky Sox catcher Hector Ortiz. Abad extended his season-best hitting streak to seven games with an RBI single that brought home Alvarez unearned to make the score 2-1.
The Sounds missed an opportunity to tie the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning when Carlos Rivera was thrown out at the plate while trying to score on Terry Shumpert's two-out double. Prior to Shumpert's two-bagger, Rivera had reached on a two-out single before being thrown out to end the inning on a relay from Freeman and shortstop Clint Barmes.
Moriarty atoned for his earlier error by tying the contest at 2-2 in the home half of the seventh with a leadoff solo homer to left off Colorado Springs starter Denny Stark, his third longball of the season.
In the evening's sibling rivalry moment, Sounds reliever Hector Almonte induced his brother, Erick, to ground into a first-pitch double play in the top of the eighth inning, their first faceoff this season.
Sky Sox reliever Chris Gissell (4-0) picked up the victory after tossing two scoreless innings, while Boyd (1-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering the game-deciding longball. Gilfillan earned his first save.
The Sounds will look for a series split when the teams wrap up the four-game set with a Memorial Day matinee at 2:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon. Left-hander Dave Williams (3-1, 3.49) toes the rubber for the Sounds. He is scheduled to face Sky Sox right-hander Kevin Jarvis (0-1, 6.88).
