Five-Run 12th Gives 'Cats 6-1 Extra-Inning Win at Holyoke

June 8, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After both sides combined for two runs over the first 11 innings of the game, North Adams exploded for five runs in the top of the 12th, as the SteepleCats topped Holyoke, 6-1, in extra innings in a road NECBL Western Division tilt on Saturday night at MacKenzie Stadium.

Finishing the game with 15 hits as a team, the SteepleCats (2-0) remain undefeated on the year thanks to a stellar start from Rider righty *Mike Murphy (Rider)*, while junior *Joe Landi (Rhode Island)* scored the eventual winning run on a stolen base and an error to begin the offensive onslaught against the Blue Sox (1-1) in the 12th.

After that, the runs began to pour in for the visitors, who tallied four consecutive singles to make it a 4-1 game before freshman *Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame)* rounded out the scoring with a two-RBI double to account for the final margin of victory.

Both starting pitchers did their part Saturday, as Murphy and junior righty Mike Burke of the University of Buffalo put up zeroes through most of their performances. Murphy finished with a no decision after tossing 7 2/3 strong frames, allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Burke, meanwhile, lasted 9 1/3 innings, striking out eight and walking one while yielding seven strikeouts.

Lefty reliever *Stephen Frey (Monmouth)* wound up with the win after coming on in the bottom of the eighth and worked around a pair of precarious situations, while junior righty *Anthony Mannuccia (Hartford)* went to the bump in the 12th to close it out.

After five scoreless frames, North Adams finally got on the board thanks to three hits in the top of the sixth. After an error allowed *Jose Cuas (Maryland)* to reach, three consecutive infield singles - including two of the bunt variety - drove in the first run of the game, highlighted by an infield single off the bat of junior *Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) *to give the SteepleCats a one-run lead.

But facing a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation, Burke buckled down and induced a 1-2-3 double play and another groundout to avoid further trouble having allowed just the one run.

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Joel Fisher led off the frame with a bloop single - the first of the game against Murphy - to put the home side in business. Then, after a lineout and a stolen base, Travis Maezes lined a hard double down the right field line to tie the contest at 1-1 after seven innings of action.

From there on out, each side continued to put up zeroes through the remainder of regulation, as Frey worked around a two-out double in the ninth after entering in the bottom of the eighth.

North Adams had chances in both the top of the 10th and the 11th with the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Miami reliever Jace Herrera stymied the SteepleCats on both occasions to keep the game tied until surrendering five earned runs in the 12th.

North Adams returns home to face New Bedford on Sunday (June 9), with first pitch slated for 4:30 p.m. from Joe Wolfe Field.
