NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - North Adams SteepleCat alumnus and Seton Hall junior Brian Gilbert was selected in the seventh round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins on Friday, becoming the 78th player in franchise history to join the professional ranks. Gilbert was the 200thselection overall.
A member of the 2011 SteepleCats, Gilbert is coming off a fantastic junior campaign during which he established himself as one of the top closers in the BIG EAST Conference.
The righty was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team after leading the conference with 25 games finished and finished tied for sixth in the BIG EAST with six saves. Named NJCBA Fireman of the Year, Gilbert pitched to a career-low 2.40 ERA and struck out 49 batters in 48.2 innings pitched for the Pirates.
"We are very proud of Brian and are proud of the fact that another member of the SteepleCats family has been drafted," President Dan Bosley noted. "It shows Brian's hard work and dedication, as well as the great operation that we have here in North Adams. We wish Brian Gilbert the best of luck and believe he has a very bright future."
Back in the summer of 2011, the Toms River, N.J., native guided the SteepleCats on the mound, making six starts and eight appearances while pitching to the tune of a 3.27 ERA - fourth-best on the team - during which he struck out 26 and walked 18 over a span of 44 innings.
Through his first two seasons with Seton Hall, Gilbert helped lead Seton Hall to the 2011 BIG EAST Championship as a freshman before boasting solid numbers as a sophomore, as well. As a junior, Gilbert was converted to the teams' closer and dominated the ninth inning over the course of the season, helping the Pirates finish 37-18 overall while just missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Rounds 11-50 of the First-Year Player Draft continue all day Saturday. Several more SteepleCat alumni are expected to go at some point Saturday in the draft, including 2012 alumni Jeff Roy (Rhode Island), Charlie Law (Rutgers) and Brian Hunter (Hartford).
