25 NECBL Players Selected in Day Two of MLB Draft

25 NECBL players, 16 of them pitchers, were selected on Day Two of the Major League Baseball Draft. It took deep in the third round before the Detroit Tigers selected RHP and former Keene Swamp Bat Jeff Thompson of Louisville, but his drafting started a run of 25 NECBL players taken over the next 221 selections.

Rounds 4 through 10 all featured at least two draftees from the New England League.

Thompson was the third NECBL player taken in the 2013 Draft. The Houston Astros selected former Newport Gull and Stanford standout Mark Appel with the first overall pick. The New York Yankees chose former North Shore Navigator and Notre Dame 3B Eric Jagielo in the first round with the 26th pick.

Jeff Thompson/ 2011 Keene/ 3rd/ 94/ Detroit/ RHP Louisville- The 2011 NECBL Top Prospect and All-Star Game starter, Thompson had a 1.89 ERA and 53 Ks in 38 IP in his 8 starts.

Conrad Gregor/ 2011 Newport/ 4th/ 107/ Houston/ 1B Vanderbilt-Hit .330 with 8 2B, 7 HR and 24 RBI in 25 games. Gregor was a Second Team All-NECBL pick

Tyler Skulina/ 2011 Keene/ 4th/ 108/ Chicago Cubs/ RHP Kent State-6'5" pitcher appeared in 10 games, six starts and fanned 19 in 34.2 IP

Ryan Horstmann/ 2012 Keene/ 4th/ 117/ Seattle/LHP St. John's-Fanned 37 batters in 26.2 innings while holding hitters to a .200 average against. Horstmann started a combined no-hitter as a Swamp Bat.

Taylor Williams/ 2011 Keene/ 4th/ 122/ Milwaukee /RHP Kent State-Second Team All-NECBL and an NECBL All-Star. Williams went 6-1 with a save and a 2.17 ERA, striking out 41 in 41.2 innings.

Chad Wallach/ 2011 Laconia/ 5th/ 142/ Miami/ C Cal State Fullerton-Had five extra base hits in 60 at bats

Jack Reinheimer/ 2011 Newport/ 5th/ 147/ Seattle/ SS East Carolina-The 2011 NECBL All-Star Game MVP. Reinheimer hit .259 and had the second most assists among shortstops

Dan Slania/ 2011 North Shore/ 5th/ 162/ San Francisco/RHP Notre Dame- Fanned 23 in 32 innings while making 11 appearances

Luke Farrell/ 2010,12 New Bedford/ 6th/ 174/ Kansas City/RHP Northwestern-6'6" pitcher went 3-1 with a 3.65 ERA in nine games in 2010, striking out 34 in 37 innings. Luke is the son of Red Sox manager John Farrell
