After losing a late lead, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans stormed back for a five-run 10th inning to beat the Columbia Fireflies 11-9 in the series-opening game on Tuesday night. With the win, the Birds now hold a 63-45 record and are 24-19 in the second half. The Fireflies dropped to 55-53 and 20-23 in the second half. It was the sixth extra-innings win for the Pelicans this season.

It was a big night from Brian Kalmer (4-5, HR, 2B, 5 RBI, BB) who smashed the first four-hit game of his career and drove in five with a two-run home run in the fourth and a bases-clearing double in the seventh. Myrtle Beach pulled away in the 10th inning with an RBI single from Cristian Hernandez (1-5, RBI) to give them the lead. That was followed by an RBI double from Reivaj Garcia (2-6, 2B, RBI), a two-run single by Brett Bateman (2-6, 3 RBI), and an RBI single from Kalmer to round out the scoring.

Tuesday's win went to Starlyn Pichardo (5-1) who gave up three runs, one earned in 1 2/3 innings of work by walking four. Gregori Montano came in for the save by striking out the final batter. Starter Koen Moreno stretched four scoreless frames with five strikeouts in the win.

Columbia built their comeback off two big innings. They tied it in the seventh with five runs coming across the plate. Trevor Werner (1-5, RBI) hit an RBI to get things going and bring the Pelicans' lead down to 6-2. That was followed by an RBI single by Jared Dickey (2-4, 2 RBI, BB) and a bases-loaded walk to Carson Roccaforte (1-4, RBI, BB). Spencer Nivens (2-4, 2 RBI, BB) tied the game on a two-run single as the tying run was thrown out at the plate. Columbia would score three in the bottom of the 10th but the winning run would be left at the plate.

Reliever Chazz Martinez (6-6) took the loss with five runs, three earned coming across through his 1 2/3 frames. Starter Henry Williams pitched the first five innings with two runs, one earned being charged, and five strikeouts.
