Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., Mar. 2, 2004) â The Long Island Ducks today announced that five former members of the squad have signed contracts to play for Major League organizations this season. Pitchers Pedro Borbon, Jr. (San Diego) and Jon Cannon (Arizona), along with outfielder Derrick Gibson (Anaheim) and infielders Adonis Harrison (Tampa Bay) and Elvis Pena (Houston) have all been penned to contracts with their respective squads after impressing major league scouts during the 2003 season.
"We're thrilled for all of the guys," said Ducks general manager Michael Hirsch. "When a player comes to Long Island, they are looking for an opportunity to prove themselves. These players all demonstrated their abilities and took full advantage of their opportunity both while they were with us and after."
2004 marks the second consecutive season that five Ducks have been signed by big league clubs in the offseason. In addition, five Ducks were signed during the 2003 season, bringing the organization's four-year total of players inked by big league clubs to 16.
Long Island opens spring training on April 24 in Homestead, Florida in preparation for the May 6 season opener at Newark. On May 11, the Ducks take on the defending Atlantic League champion Somerset Patriots in their home opener at 7:05 p.m.
The Long Island Ducks, who play their home games at Citibank Park, are entering their fifth anniversary season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have filled their ballpark to over 100 percent capacity for four consecutive seasons and are one of the most successful minor league franchises in the country.
