D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (January 22, 2004) - D.C. United's Bobby Convey, Doug Warren, Alecko Eskandarian, Brian Carroll and David Stokes were today named to a 22-player roster by U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team head coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick. The group will travel down to Guadalajara, Mexico, this afternoon in advance of the 2004 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament from Feb. 2-12. The team will train for seven days before Myernick must cut down the roster to 20 players by the Jan. 31 deadline imposed by CONCACAF.
"We are proud of our five D.C. United players who have been named to the Olympic Qualifying roster," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "They have worked hard for the opportunity to represent the United States and we wish them and the Olympic Team the best of luck in qualifying."
The U.S. U-23s will first face Panama on Tuesday, Feb. 3, followed by matches against Canada on Thursday, Feb. 5 and Honduras on Saturday, Feb. 7. All three U.S. opening round matches in Group A will be played at the 10,000-seat Estadio Tres de Marzo (in the Zapopan area of Guadalajara) and kickoff at 8 p.m. (local/CT). U.S. games can be followed by fans live via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics.
The tournament opens on Feb. 2 with Group B action featuring Costa Rica, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and the host nation at Estadio Jalisco. The top two teams from each group will meet in the single-elimination semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Estadio Jalisco, with the winner of Group A meeting the second-place team from Group B, and the winner of Group B meeting the second-place team from Group A. The two semi-final winners will earn automatic berths to Athens 2004 and meet in the final on Feb. 12.
Convey, who is also a member of the U.S. U-20 and Full National Teams, completed his fourth professional season with United in 2003. He appeared in 21 matches for D.C., including his first ever playoff appearance on November 1st. Convey finished the season with five points on two goals and one assist. His play in last month's U-20 World Cup earned the midfielder all-tournament honors. Convey played for the senior U.S. team in a 1-1 draw with Denmark on Jan. 18 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Warren, a product of Clemson University, stepped in to be United's starting goalkeeper after Nick Rimando went down with a knee injury on September 25th. He completed his first professional season in 2003 with a 0-4-2 record, helping D.C. to make the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
Eskandarian also completed his rookie season in 2003, making 23 appearances for the Black-and-Red and totaling eight points on three goals and two assists. He was the first overall pick of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. Carroll and Stokes did not see any league action in their rookie seasons with the Black-and-Red.
