Fisher Cats Enter All-Star Break With 4-3 Win Over Harrisburg

July 12, 2004 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH -Paul Chiaffredo hit a three-run home run, and Chris Baker worked five innings of one-run ball as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats beat the Harrisburg Senators 4-3 Monday afternoon at Gill Stadium. Baker won for the first time this season, as the Fisher Cats took three of four games from the Senators in the final series before the Eastern League All-Star Break.

Chiaffredo, who entered the weekend with two home runs all season, hit his third homer of the series against Harrisburg starter and losing pitcher David Maust (1-4). Maikel Jova and John-Ford Griffin started the inning with consecutive singles before Chiaffredo's homer made it 3-1.

Anton French, who entered the game when Dominic Rich was ejected by home plate umpire John Coons in the fifth inning, hit a run-scoring triple in his only at-bat to give New Hampshire (51-39) a 4-1 lead after seven. Coons tossed Rich for arguing a called third strike just a day after ejecting Fisher Cat outfielder Tyrell Godwin.

Baker (1-0) pitched five innings to win for the first time since last August 24 when he was with the New Haven Ravens. He allowed four hits, including a solo home run to centerfielder Josh McKinley that gave Harrisburg (30-60) a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The victory snapped Baker's personal 11-game losing streak.

Harrisburg scored two runs in the eighth inning. Alejandro Machado led off with a single against New Hampshire reliever Travis Thompson. Thompson then committed a throwing error on Rich Lane's grounder back to the mound. With two outs, Jordan DeJong allowed back-to-back RBI infield singles to Juan Camilo and GJ Raymundo to make it 4-3.

DeJong pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his fourth save. The right-hander allowed a one-out triple to Josh Labandeira in the ninth inning before striking out Larry Broadway and inducing Lane to pop out to third baseman Justin Singleton to end the game. Singleton moved to third base for the first time in his professional career after the Rich ejection.

New Hampshire is off until Thursday night when it opens a four-game series at Harrisburg Thursday night at 6:35pm. Coverage begins at 6:05pm on the WKXL Fisher Cats Radio Network, available at www.fishercatsradio.com and www.wkxlradio.com.

New Hampshire shortstop Aaron Hill, Rich, and pitchers Todd Ozias and Brandon League will play in the Eastern League All-Star Game Wednesday night in Bowie, MD.
