Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 24, 2010) - The Newark Bears scored five runs in the eleventh inning and the Bridgeport Bluefish suffered a 10-5 defeat on Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Bridgeport starter Kevin Mannix served five innings and Newark's Kelvin Villa tossed four and one-third. Neither pitcher factored in the decision. Michael Nix (4-2) lasted three innings and gave up no runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two. Antonio Alfonseca (2-3) allowed five runs in the eleventh to suffer the loss.

The Bluefish trailed early as Bridgeport allowed a run in the first. Tim Raines Jr. doubled and with one out, Daryle Ward served an extra-base hit to plate Raines.

Bridgeport bounced back in the bottom of the third by scoring two runs and taking the lead. Luis Rodriguez and Brandon Chaves singled to center to set up runners at first and second. Adam Greenberg reached on a sacrifice bunt and an error by Villa. A sacrifice fly to center from Steve Moss pushed the first Bluefish run across to tie the game and advanced Rodriguez to third. On a pickoff attempt of Chaves, the ball went down the rightfield line which allowed Rodriguez to come home.

The score was two-to-one when Bridgeport tallied one more in the fourth. Hiram Bocachica led off with a double. After an out had been recorded, Joe Jiannetti smacked a single and scored Bocachica.

Newark responded with four runs in the top of the fifth. With one out, Randy Gress tripled and Raines walked. Gress touched home after Kennard Jones reached on a miscue by Steve Moss. A second out was recorded before Sandy Madera walked and Brian Barton cleared the bases with a double.

The Bluefish struck twice following the four-run attack against Mannix. Consecutive singles from Moss, Josh Phelps, and Hiram Bocachica pushed Moss across to cut the deficit to one run. Phelps tried to advance to third on the Bocachica single but was gunned out; the designated hitter moved to second the throw. After Luis Lopez walked, Joe Jiannetti tied the game at five with a base hit.

In the eleventh, the Bears put the game away with five runs. James Cooper doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice. Raines served an RBI triple to rightcenter and scored on an overthrow at third. A second out was recorded before Ward, Madera, and Barton earned passes to load the bases for Eric Munson. The third baseman cleared the bags with a double to rightcenter.
