(Bridgeport, C.T., Aug. 24, 2010) - The Newark Bears defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 10-5 in 11 innings Tuesday night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Tim Raines Jr. started the game with a double and was followed two batters later by Daryle Ward, who ripped a double into centerfield to make it 1-0 Bears. Bridgeport starter Kevin Mannix settled down and didn't surrender a hit over his next three frames and retired eight straight at one point.
Bridgeport answered back against Kelvin Villa in the third inning. Two straight singles and an error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. Steve Moss plated a run with a sacrifice fly to center and a throwing error on Villa brought in another run and it was 2-1 'Fish. Hiram Bocachica doubled to start the fourth inning and came around to score on a Joe Jiannetti RBI single to push the lead to two runs.
Newark moved ahead in the visitor's fifth inning, sending eight batters to the plate. Randy Gress tripled to the right field corner followed by a Raines Jr. walk. Kennard Jones drove a sacrifice fly out to left that was mishandled allowing Gress to score. After Sandy Madera drew a two-out walk to load the bases, Brian Barton drilled a double into right to score three and give the Bears a two-run advantage. The 'Fish came right back in the home half on RBI singles by Bocachica and Jiannetti to tie the game at 5.
The game remained tied until the top of the 11th inning as Newark used nine batters to plate five runs on four hits against Antonio Alfonseca. With Cooper aboard after a leadoff double, Raines Jr. tripled to right-center field and came in on a throwing error on the second baseman to push ahead by two runs. The Bears loaded the bases with two outs and Eric Munson deposited a bases-clearing double to give the visitors a 10-5 lead.
Michael Nix (4-2) got the win as he tossed three scoreless innings in relief, scattering three hits, with a walk and strikeout. Alfonseca (2-3) allowed all five runs with a pair of walks in the 11th inning. Villa allowed five runs, three earned, on nine hits over four and one-third innings, but didn't factor in the decision. Mannix fired five innings, surrendering five runs, two earned, on five hits with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts. He also didn't factor in the decision.
The series moves to game three between Newark and Bridgeport on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
