Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of former Major League outfielder Chris Roberson.
Roberson, 32, played parts of the 2006 and 2007 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, posting a .232 batting average in 85 games between the two seasons.
"He's a huge addition to our club," Forney said. "He has a very impressive resume and we're thrilled to have him. He's the kind of guy that can be a game changer on a nightly basis. He switch hits and plays centre field. He's going to make an impact offensively and defensively."
A product of Oakland, California, Roberson has played the last two seasons with the Monterrey Sultans in the Triple-A Mexican League. In 100 games last season, he hit .337 with 13 home runs and 66 RBI. A year prior in 103 games, he batted .308, smacked 12 home runs and drove in 46 runs.
His last stint in affiliated ball came in 2009 with the Arizona Diamondbacks system with Triple-A Reno of the International League. He hit seven home runs, had 59 RBI and stolen 30 bases in 127 games with the Aces. He also played at Triple-A in the Phillies and Baltimore Orioles organizations. In total, Roberson has 640 games at Triple-A on his resume.
In 2005, Roberson was the top hitter statistically in the Double-A Eastern League with Reading and was named the league's rookie of the year.
Also known for his speed on the base paths, Roberson stole a career-high 59 bases with Single-A Lakewood of the South Atlantic League in 2003, which led the league.
Roberson was selected by Philadelphia in the ninth round (260th overall) in the 2001 MLB amateur draft.
The Goldeyes now have 19 players signed for the 2012 season, including six pitchers and 13 position players.
Fans looking to purchase season tickets and nine-game mini packs for the 2012 season can call the Goldeyes office at 982-BASE (2273) or visit the Shaw Park box office.
