First week of camp concludes with day off

San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 11, 2006) - With the first week of training camp under their belts, the San Jose SaberCats enjoyed a well deserved day off Wednesday before resuming with two-a-day practices on Thursday.
"I like our team," said head coach Darren Arbet, reflecting on the opening week of camp. "The guys are really working hard."
Arbet has been particularly pleased with play of new quarterbacks Stoney Case and Chris Lewis. "Stoney and Chris are doing a tremendous job, as is Mark Grieb, at the quarterback spot," he stated. "Whenever you have play like that you have to be happy with it."
With the recent signing of Fresno State product Fitu Tu'ua, San Jose now has 14 linemen on its camp roster. In the past the team has dressed seven linemen for a game while keeping eight or nine on the active roster.
"We have 14 linemen in camp and they're all working real hard," Arbet said. "The decisions the coaching staff will have to make in a few weeks will be difficult ones."
Also, according to Arbet, the defensive secondary appears to be in good shape. "Clevan Thomas has stepped it up to another level and Terrance Joseph is going to add a lot to our defense with his size."
The SaberCats will have a joint practice session next week with the Grand Rapids Rampage on Monday and a scrimmage contest on Tuesday at HP Pavilion.
"I'm excited for the scrimmage," Arbet said. "I know the team is as well because now they will get to hit somebody else besides each other, so I am sure they are looking forward to that."
Arbet and his coaching staff will use the joint practice and scrimmage to get a look at several rookies and newcomers.
"There are some kids that we want to see what they do in a game-type situation," he said. "Some of the veteran guys will probably be upset because I am not going to let them play, but there's nothing new there."
The new Sportexe field turf at the team's practice facility has been a big hit with the players and Arbet conveys the same feelings.
"It's been awesome," he stated. "It really saves your legs and mentally the guys like it. Anytime you can help them out mentally, as well as physically, the practices are much better."
