First Place Beetles down Bats

July 24, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud River Bats News Release

(Alexandria, MN)A pair of solo shots halted the Bats two game winning streak. The Beetles defeated St. Cloud by a 4-2 final.

A two run rally for the Bats in the seventh could not help them over come an early deficit. They fall to 9-8 in the second half.

Some bad breaks put the Bats in an early hole. A defensive miscue allowed Logan Bowers to reach base. He scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat off Rick Devereaux. The Beetles led by one after one.

Two innings later the Beetles added to their advantage. Ben Magsig blasted a long ball. The solo shot put the Beetles up 2-0 after three.

Kevin Grove slammed the first pitch over the fourth inning out of the park. In addition to Grove's homer the Beetles tacked on another insurance run in the fourth to make it a four run lead.

The Bats rallied in the seventh inning. Carlos Lopez found his way on base to begin the frame. A Jeremy Banks single followed.

C.J. Gillman knocked in Lopez on a one bagger. The fourth consecutive base hit for the Bats came off the bat of Ron Sucre to plate Banks.

However, the Bats could not close the gap any further as Alexandria emerged with a 4-2 win. The Beetles extended their lead over the Bats in the North Division standings.

Austen Wisroth takes the loss for the Bats. Jake Smith toes the rubber for St. Cloud tomorrow night as they begin a three game road series with Duluth.

The Bats return home Thursday Night for Elvis Night at Joe Faber Field. Get your tickets now at www.riverbats.com or by calling 320-240-9798. Tickets can also be purchased at the River Bats ticket office, located in the MAC Complex neighboring Joe Faber Field.
