Mallards Drop Series Finale Vs. Express

July 24, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - July 24, 2011. The Madison Mallards were defeated by the Eau Claire Express Sunday evening 2-1 in front of 6,542 fans at the "Duck Pond." The Mallards were attempting the three- game sweep, but came up short due to good pitching from two Express players. Sunday's loss marks the first time the Mallards fell to Eau Claire at home this season.

Just as the night before, pitching ruled above all, as both teams did very well.

Madison starter Chris Lamb (Davidson) saw the minimum amount of batters through three innings, but ran into a snag in the fourth. He gave up the two decisive runs in the frame and had to exit after the inning due to a high pitch count. In all, Lamb pitched four innings, gave up three hits, walked four, and struck out two. He is now 0-3 this season.

Express starter Luke Westphal (Wisconsin - Oshkosh) was lights out. In his first win of the season, Westphal (1-1) went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out five. His season earned run average was lowered to a miniscule 0.49.

Bullpens for each squad were also effective.

Denny Clement (Texas A&M) pitched three innings and Tony Bryant (Oregon State) went two innings in relief for the Mallards. The two combined for no runs on just two hits, walked three, and struck out three. Clement has yet to allow an earned run this season, and Bryant's ERA dropped to 0.79.

Harvey Martin (San Diego State) pitched the final two innings for the Express, earning his second save of the season. Martin allowed the tying and winning runs on base, but struck out the side in the ninth before further damage could be done.

Offense came at a premium Sunday, as there were a total of only 11 hits in the ball game.

Leading the way for the Ducks was Andrew Barna (Davidson). Lamb's college teammate went 2-for-4 and drove in a run batting out of the eighth spot in the order. Willie Argo also went 2-for-4 in the game. The other Mallards to tally hits were Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) and Mike McQuillan (Iowa).

All-Star shortstop Ty Forney (New Mexico State) shined for the Express. Forney was 3-for-4 and scored a run in the win. He also played very well defensively, making some very tough plays look easy. Nick Addison (UIC) and Justin Viele (Santa Clara) also had hits for Eau Claire in the win.

The Mallards also celebrated Susan G. Komen For the Cure night at the "Duck Pond." The Mallards wore pink uniforms courtesy of Marshfield Clinic, used pink bats, and ran around pink bases to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The jerseys, bats, and bases were all auctioned off following the game, and the Mallards, with the help of their fans, were able to make a donation to the Madison Susan G. Komen For the Cure affiliate.

The Mallards will have an off day Monday and will take the time to get ready for a two-game set against the Battle Creek Bombers that starts Tuesday, July 26 at 7:05 p.m.
