New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma -July 5th- The New England Riptide returned to Martin Softball Field today for the first game of a double header with the Chinese Taipei Olympic Team. This was their first game in five days and the rust showed. Erica Beach (0-3) pitched very well for the Riptide but the defense was not behind her as the Riptide dropped a 5-4 decision.

It looked like it was going to be worse. The Chinese jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Beached walked the first batter she faced, Lai Meng Ting. Chen Miao Yi then attempted a sac bunt, but the Riptide defense was unable to field it among confusion and the Chinese had runners at first and third with no outs. Beach almost got out of it with a strike out and pop up but the Riptide botched a first and third steal to allow the first run to score. Three consecutive hits added the rest of the runs. The Chinese scored their fifth and final in the second on a throwing error by Jackie Pasquerella after Lo Hsiao Ting had singled.

Now it was the Riptide's turn to mount a comeback and they nearly came all the way back, scoring all four of their runs. The Riptide began the inning with five consecutive singles by Pasquerella, Lisa Modglin, TJ Eadus, Shanel Scott and Carri Martin. The inning was capped off by a double by Lyndsey Angus, the sixth hit of the inning for the Riptide on a day when they got a total of eight. Jocelyn Forest came in to relieve Beach with two outs in the sixth, but the Riptide were unable to mount any further offense.

Game two of the double header is tonight with game three on Sunday at 5:05 and the final game on Monday at 7:05. The Riptide then play an away/home series with the Akron Racers, returning to Martin Softball Field for the home portion on July 16th.
