Riptide end season with 2-1 win over Glory

August 17, 2008 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma -August 17 - With nothing to do now except wait for the playoffs, the New England Riptide and the Washington Glory met for their final game of the season in Lowell tonight. Eileen Canney took the circle for the Riptide looking for win number 13 to tie her with Katie Burkhart for the league lead. Canney, in third place with 142 strikeouts, needed 15 to tie Angela Tincher for the league lead and seven to pull even with Burkhart. Meanwhile the Glory sent Sarah Pauly to the circle, a candidate herself for pitcher of the year honors with an 11-5 record and a league best 1.66 ERA. It would be Canney around at the end of the game picking up her 13th win striking out eight to give her 150 for the year as the Riptide won the final game of the year 2-1.

The Riptide started strong taking a 1-0 lead in the second on a single by Gina Carbonatto followed by a double by Lisa Iancin.

Walks and indecision cost the Riptide a run in the fourth as Washington tied it 1-1. Oli Keohohou led the inning off with a base on balls. Sara Larquier attempted a sacrifice and bunted back to Canney who could not decide which base to play and wound up eating the ball. A bunt by Jess Dignon followed and again the Riptide did not make a play to load the bases. Canney got Leah English on a strikeout and Callista Balko on an infield pop up but walked Jessica Moore to score the run.

The Riptide got it back in their half of the fourth, Lisa Modglin opening the frame with a single up the middle, moving to second on a sacrifice and scoring on an Alex Sutton single.

The Riptide now head to the playoffs in Kimberly Wisconsin where they take on the Chicago Bandits in the first round on Friday August 22.
