Riptide clinch playoff berth with 5-1 win over Glory

August 16, 2008 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma - With a loss by the Rockford Thunder to the Chicago Bandits, the Riptide did not have to win tonight's game to advance to the playoffs. It was not relevant as the Riptide, not willing to back into the playoffs, came out swinging and scored two runs in each of the first two innings off Desiree Serrano (11-7) on route to a convincing 5-1 win over the previously first place Glory. Jocelyn Forest (7-8) won a complete game for the Riptide and did so in high style, allowing only five hits while striking out eight.

The Riptide started well with two in first helped by a Glory error. In fact, of the Riptide's hits, three occurred before the first out. Carri Martin singled and Jackie Pasquerella beat out a bunt attempt. A throwing error by Sara Larquier allowed Martin to go to third. Lisa Modglin promptly followed with a sharp single to score Martin. Pasquerella scored on a sacrifice by Lyndsey Angus. Pasquerella is now batting .355 on the year, third in the NPF.

After the Glory got one back in the top of the second the Riptide scored two more in the second to take a 4-1 lead. Again it was Pasquerella with a key hit to drive in Lisa Iancin who had singled and Alex Sutton who had walked. After the second, the Riptide failed to score another run or get another hit until the sixth inning when the Riptide added their fifth run on hits by Martin and Pasquerella's third hit of the night. They had accomplished their mission, a win and a trip to the playoffs, the only team in the league to be there three years in a row. The Riptide's first round opponent will be the Chicago Bandits.

The Riptide conclude their regular season on Sunday at Martin Softball Field at 5:05. It is Teacher Appreciation night and Back to School night, sponsored by Staples. All teachers will receive free admission to the game.
