Washington Glory News Release
CHANTILLY, VA -- Desiree Serrano struck out a career-high 14 batters, threw 100 pitches and took advantage of her team's offensive output to defeat the Chicago Bandits 6-3 on Friday in the first game Chicago has played in Washington.
Serrano (5-3) tied Monica Abbott for the team record for strikes in a game by throwing her 100th strike on the fly ball by Nicole Trimboli to end the game. The 14 strikeouts were the most by Serrano professionally and nearly doubled her season output to date as she finished the game with 30 strikeouts on the season.
The Glory bats were as alive as Serrano's arm by smashing three home runs, none bigger than Catalina Morris' second of the season, a three-run home run off relief pitcher Amanda Freed (0-1) in the third inning to give the Glory a 5-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Glory led in the first after an RBI single by Oli Keohohou but the lead was short-lived as Rachel Folden (2-for-2, RBI, 2 runs) hit her fourth home run of the season just off the top of the fence in left field. That was followed by Jamie Clark's (1-for-4, RBI, run) solo blast over the centerfield fence to put the visitors ahead 2-1.
Sara Larquier (1-for-3, RBI, run) smashed a 2-0 pitch in the bottom of the inning off starter Kristina Thorson to tie the game, setting up Morris' blast the next inning. Courtney Bures (2-for-3, RBI, 2 runs) hit her league-leading seventh home run of the season to lead off the fifth off relief pitcher Tracie Adix. She also leads the league with 19 RBI.
The scoring was capped in the sixth on an RBI single by Laura Harms (1-for-3, RBI) with two out in the inning.
This was the first time these two teams played in the DC area as Chicago did not visit the Glory last season. The two teams will be back in action at 7:05 p.m. for the remainder of the series, Saturday through Monday at the Westfield Softball Complex in Chantilly.
