Lancaster Stormers News Release

Thursday nights makeup game between the Bridgeport Bluefish and Lancaster Barnstormers was all about the doubles. Three first-inning doubles produced six runs. Three double plays kept the Barnstormers pitchers from trouble. It all added up to the Barnstormers doubling Bridgeport, 10-5, in a rain-shortened game at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The win improved Lancasters home record to 14-3 on the season and 18-10 overall. With Atlantic City getting rained out, the Barnstormers widened the first half lead to 1 ? games over the Surf.

The first of the three double plays helped Cam Smith (3-0) escape a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam with only one run crossing in the first.

With the bases loaded on a single and two walks, Chris Van Rossum smoked a two-bagger inside the first base bag for a 2-1 lead against Jimmy Journell (1-1). Lance Burkhart followed with a double into right center to produce two more runs. After a walk to Manny Santana filled in first base, Steve Van Note whacked a double down the left field line for two more as Lancasters tallied its biggest inning of the year.

Former Barnstormers outfielder Norm Hutchins belted a two-run homer off Smith (3-0) in the second inning to trim the lead to 6-3 before Smith settled down to retire 13 of the next 15 hitters.

The Bluefish had a chance in the seventh. Smith walked Alex Fernandez and Hector Kuilan with one out, and Hutchins followed with a single to left, loading the bases. Bryant Nelson slammed a two-run double off the right field wall, but Hutchins was caught around third and ran into the second out. Rob Henkel walked Steve Hine, bringing Angel Echevarria to the plate as the tying run. Matt Knox came on to get a ground ball, and Lancaster would strike for two more in the bottom of the inning to ice the game.

Knox, who earned his first save, was warming up for the top of the ninth when a heavy thunderstorm broke loose on Clipper Magazine Stadium, washing out the remainder of the game.
