Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
Day One of the Major League Baseball Draft was completed today with the the Kansas City Royals making 18 selections. With the first overall pick of the draft, Kansas City selected 22 year-old right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar (ho-chay-ver) who had been pitching for the Fort Worth Cats of the independent Central Baseball League. Hochevar pitched collegiately at Tennessee and was selected with the 40 pick in the 2005 by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but did not sign.
Another notable picks made by the Royals today include: 8th round pick, RHP Josh Cribb of Clemson, the #1 seed in the on-going NCAA Div. 1 Baseball Championship.
It is not known at this time which of the Royals draft picks will be assigned to Idaho Falls. However, in years past a large number of the Chukars roster has been filled with players coming directly from the first year player draft.
Players assigned to the Chukars will arrive in Idaho Falls on June 15th and have a 4-day mini camp at McDermott Field leading up to the first game on June 20th at Casper. The Chukars home opener is June 24th at McDermott Field against the Ogden Raptors at 7:15 pm.
