FireWolves Keep It Close on the Road Against Panther City

The Albany FireWolves (2-12) were defeated by the Panther City Lacrosse Club (9-6), 12-8, at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth on Saturday evening. Once again, it was a low scoring affair, thanks to the Albany defense, but Panther City went on a five-goal run between the second and third quarters and held on for the home victory.

Panther City secured the game's first faceoff, but came up empty on their opening possession. After a scrum for the ball, Marshall Powless found a cutting Ethan Walker who buried the first goal of the game for Albany. Following a save by Justin Geddie, he connected with Mike Byrne in transition, who looked ahead and found Hiana Thompson who did the rest to give Albany an early two-goal lead. The FireWolves maintained the momentum as Tanner Thomson wrapped around the back of the net and dunked the ball in for another goal. Panther City finally got on the board with two minutes to go in the opening period as Patrick Dodds bounced one past Geddie. Panther City cut the deficit to one as Will Malcom caught a pass on the right side and buried one with just 20 seconds to go in the quarter.

Three minutes into the second, the FireWolves struck again as Connor Kelly was hit in transition and found space over the right should of Nick Damude. Panther City struck back shortly after as Phil Caputo rifled in his first of the night. With just over ten to go in the half, Dodds notched his second of the night to tie the game at four goals apiece. Following a brief scoring drought by both sides, Josh Medeiros ran out in transition and buried twister shot from just outside the crease to give Panther City their first lead of the night. Seconds later, Malcom found space on the right side and went five-hole on Geddie to push the Panther City lead to two goals with less than a minute to play in the first half.

The pace kept up in the second half as Jonathan Donville notched another for Panther City to grow their lead. Seconds later, Powless went behind the back for a nifty goal to keep Albany within two. Still within the first few minutes of the second half, Connor Sellars got another one for Panther City to put the club up 8-5. Albany quickly got the goal back as John Piatelli secured a rebound in front of the net and scored. Panther City was able to answer as former FireWolf Anthony Malcom got revenge against his old team. The momentum continued for Panther City as Nathan Grenon scored from just outside the crease after an unsuccessful FireWolves challenge.

After nearly four minutes of scoreless action to start the final period, Piatelli found space after beating a defender to bounce in his second goal of the contest. Following a penalty on Panther City Powless was wide open on the right side and netted his second of the contest to bring the Wolves within two. Panther City was able to stop the bleeding as Caputo went behind the back for his second of the night. Panther City added another as Matt Hossack scored on an empty net to grow the lead to four. Neither team scored in the final minute as Panther City held on to a 12-8 victory.
