ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies claimed the series opener on Friday with a 6-3 victory over Asheville. It was a wire-to-wire win, Columbia never trailed in the contest. Starter Marcel Renteria posted six scoreless innings and struck out a season-high seven. The offense backed Renteria up with 15 hits - two off tying the season high.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Despite a 17-22 mark, the Fireflies find themselves just 5 games out of first place in the Southern Division second-half race. Over its next six games, Columbia faces two teams - Greenville and Asheville - that are 1.5 and 3.0 games out of first, respectively, creating a great opportunity to gain ground in the race.
MATT WINAKER...THE THIRD: Matt Winaker became just the third Firefly this season to record a four-hit game. One of Winaker's hits on Friday was a double. The lefty also drove in a pair of runs. * Friday @ Asheville: Matt Winaker - 4-for-5, double, run, 2 RBI * June 30 @ Augusta: Dionis Paulino - 4-for-4, 2 doubles, HR, RBI * June 22 vs. Lakewood: Scott Manea - 4-for-4, 3 runs, walk
HITS, HITS, HITS: The 15 hits tallied on Friday were two shy of tying the season high set on May 6 vs. Lakewood. Winaker recorded his first four-hit game and Zach Rheams tallied his second three-hit game of the year.
SOLID MONTH: Scott Manea capped off July with a two-hit game on Tuesday. Manea drove in 19 runs, smacked a team-high nine doubles, and launched three home runs during the month. The 22-year-old played in more games in July (25) than any other month so far this year. He also played the most games of any player on the team. The catcher finished with a team-best .259 batting average and .373 on-base percentage.
LEAGUE LEADER: Scott Manea did not only reach base effectively in the month of August. His .383 on-base percentage for the season leads the South Atlantic League.
THE SEASON SERIES CONTINUES: The Fireflies will face Asheville twice in the month of August (see right). As a team, Columbia has hit .276 against the Tourists in seven games.
