Florida Firecats News Release

ESTERO, Fl - The Florida Firecats have gotten outstanding play from many of their rookies this season. Today yet another one received league wide recognition as OL/DL Alfred Peterson was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against South Georgia this past weekend.

The 6'3" 255lb rookie from Rutgers was a defensive force on the line registering 7 tackles including a career high 2 sacks. The Scarlet Knight continued to make plays by blocking a kick, forcing a fumble and recovering a fumble in the victory.

"I told him before the game that this week would be an opportunity for him to step up and make some plays," said Assistant Head Coach Victor Hall. "In camp I saw an athletic guy, with speed who just needed to learn the nuances of the arena game, each week he's gotten better and now he's just one more guy teams will have to prepare for."

Peterson's role was expanded this past week with injuries to linemen T.J. Ghoulston and Comone Fisher. Originally brought in for his defensive skills, 142 collegiate tackles with 9.5 sacks in 43 games as a 4 year starter, he has developed his offensive game play to now serve as a threat on both sides of the ball.

This is the first league award for Peterson. He joins OS Magic Benton, WR/DB Levy Brown, WR/LB Brittney Tellis and OL/DL Comone Fisher as Firecats to win league awards this season.

After winning the South Division for the 3rd straight year the Firecats will enjoy a bye week in the 1st round of the playoffs as the American Conference's #1 seed. Florida will host the lowest seeded team to advance out of the 1st round. #3 Memphis hosts #6 Louisville Saturday August 5th while #4 Manchester hosts #5 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Friday August 4th.

Tickets for the Firecats 2nd round playoff game are on sale now. Call 390-CATS (2287) to purchase tickets.

Games can be heard each week on 98.9FM WGUF and online at www.ABC-7.com and www.NBC-2.com. Next weeks' game will also be video streamed online at www.af2.com.
