Firebirds' Asst. GM Joe Stefan to Coach with Pat Peake against Erie Tonight

Flint, Mich. - The Flint Firebirds Hockey Club announced today that Firebirds Assistant General Manager, Joe Stefan will be the head coach for tonight's contest against the Erie Otters. Pat Peake will serve as Assistant Coach.

Stefan has played a critical role within the Plymouth Whalers/Flint Firebirds organization for the past 10 years. He played in the Ontario Hockey League for the Brantford Alexanders and the Hamilton Steelhawks (now the Erie Otters) from 1983-86. Following his junior playing career in the OHL, Stefan played minor pro hockey in North America from 1988-91, suiting up for the Slough Jets of the British National League (BNL).

After retiring from playing in 2002, Stefan joined the Plymouth Whalers staff as a scout in 2005 before becoming an assistant coach in 2007. Three years later, Stefan was named associate coach for the Whalers before earning the promotion as the Assistant General Manager for the Firebirds in 2015.

Former Plymouth Whaler great, Pat Peake will be joining Stefan behind the Flint Firebirds bench as an Assistant Coach tonight.

Peake played in the OHL for the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors (OHL), the franchise that eventually turned into the Plymouth Whalers / Flint Firebirds. His most successful season, in the OHL came in 1992-93 when he scored 136 points in 46 games.

Originally selected 14th overall in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals, the Rochester, Michigan native went on to earn CHL player of the year honors in 1993 and is still the all-time scorer for the Ontario Hockey League with 319 career points.

After retiring from playing Peake joined the coaching staff of the Plymouth Whalers, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons before coaching the U-16 Honey Baked youth squad.

The Firebirds and the Otters will face off against each other tonight for the third time this season. In the most recent contest between Flint and Erie, the Firebirds knocked off the Otters 6-5 on Nov. 22. Erie is ranked #1 out of 60 teams in the CHL in the BMO CHL Top-10 Rankings, which are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

Tonight's game between the Flint Firebirds and the Erie Otters is "College Night" Featuring $2 beers and $2 hot dogs for all fans in attendance and all college students will receive $2 off tickets with valid ID. Thursday is also "Pucks for Paws" night. Benefiting the Humane Society, fans can bring 1 new pet care item in to receive a complimentary $15 Silver Level ticket, courtesy of Magoo's Outlet.
